To my people, I'm a hero. To you lot? I'M THE BAD GUY!!!

Male monarch

The Male monarch is the primary adversary and final boss of Chapter 1 in Deltarune. He is the father of Lancer, and one of the four kings of the Card Kingdom.

His goal is to serve the Knight by protecting the Eastern Fountain and invading the globe with darkness, thus making the Darkners the rulers of it. This goal is thwarted, at least temporarily, when Kris seals the Eastern Fountain at the end of Chapter one.

Profile

Appearance

Rex shares multiple features with his son, such as the tear-shaped caput with a blackness spade where his optics should be, a mouth showing his tongue and big teeth, a broad and white/night grey body, and blue gloves and boots. What differentiates him from Lancer is the three-spiked crown on his caput, the enormous mouth (with more square shaped teeth compared to the curved fang shaped ones in the mouth on his face) on his stomach shaped like a blue spade from where a chain comes out when used as a weapon in boxing, and the black cape that flies abroad at the end of the battle. King'due south right arm can only be seen when he turns around or is carried past the oversupply at the end of his boxing.

Personality

Male monarch is a cold-hearted Darkner with little compassion towards his subjects and only considers his own wishes. He appears to be ability-hungry, evident by his constant wishes of gaining control of the Globe forth with his post-obit of Knight'southward plan to capture the three other Kings.

King also displays signs of abuse towards his son Lancer, in which he often neglects him and fifty-fifty uses him as a hostage to gain the upper hand in boxing. During the final fight, information technology is revealed that King'southward loyalty lies solely with the Knight, and that he'll do anything to avert failing them; to the point of threatening to impale Lancer if Kris, Ralsei, and Susie exercise not surrender.

Despite this, Rex does seem to accept some course of treat his son, as when talking to him in his jail cell, he asks if Lancer was happy. He dismisses his intentions of throwing him down a cliff as a bluff, and comments that Lancer would but bounce off if he did drop him off the castle, calling him a "bouncy little pumpkin."

Primary Story

History

Long ago, the Card Kingdom was ruled by four kings. However, some time earlier Kris and Susie enter the Carte Kingdom, the Knight appeared. It is implied that King then started working for the Knight'southward schemes, and that information technology was the Knight who created the Eastern Fountain at Card Castle. With the Knight's appearance, the three other kings were locked away in Bill of fare Castle, and King put himself and Lancer into accented power over his kingdom.

In the climax of Chapter ane, King makes an advent equally the main antagonist. When the Heroes attain the height of Carte du jour Castle, Lancer can exist seen attempting to reason with his father. However, Male monarch decides to use Lancer as a hostage in hopes of forcing the heroes to surrender. Despite this, Lancer manages to interruption costless from Rex'due south grasp, allowing the Heroes to fight back against him.

During the fight, Male monarch begins to rant about the Lightners, believing that they left the Darkners alone. However, he insists that the Lightners are no longer necessary for his purpose, as the Knight has already filled that gap. He explains his end goal is to create a globe blanketed in darkness and ruled past Darkners.

The heroes manage to defeat King, who and then surrenders and "admits" that he never wanted to take a war against the Lightners. Ralsei proceeds to heal Rex. His speech turns out to be a ruse every bit he brutally knocks out the Heroes, only for either ane of two interventions to occur:

  • If any enemy in the game has been defeated by fighting (non counting Jevil, Lancer, or Rex): Susie distracts King long enough to apply a Pacify Spell on him, thus putting him into deep slumber.
  • Otherwise: Lancer and several Darkners make it in the nick of fourth dimension to capture King. Lancer declares that "they'd rather take a male monarch that accepts them" instead of the sometime monarch.

King plays a less major role in Chapter 2, instead being an NPC that can be interacted with in the cells under Ralsei's castle. When interacted with, he asks whether Kris has come to humiliate him, and says that staying in his cell is far less humiliating than existence in a kingdom ruled by "The Lightners' niggling patsy," referring to Ralsei.

Before leaving the room, he asks whether Lancer is happy, with Susie reminding him virtually his endeavor to throw him off the edifice. Rex, calmly, mentions that, even if he did throw Lancer off the castle, he'd merely bounciness dorsum, calling him a "boisterous trivial pumpkin." Ralsei mentions the nickname being cute, and Susie gets angry, saying that they're done talking with him.

When talked to subsequently afterward recruiting everyone in Cyber World, he interacts with Queen, and they accept a temporary talk. During this talk, Rex gets angry at Queen's criticism of the "Royal Water Bottle" and her new role as Lancer'southward mother. Reluctantly, he tells her to do what she wishes, but if he cries, to bounciness him for a flake. Before she leaves, Male monarch asks her to buy him cashews from the store.

If the political party fails to larn all recruits from Cyber Earth, Male monarch simply comments that they "left [the citizens of the Cyber Globe] behind" and refuses to interact with the party, just saying "Begone."

In Battle

Attacks

The king's attacks mostly revolve around moving the box in which the SOUL resides.

  • Swing Assail: King grapples the box with his concatenation, and swings it upwardly and downward. A line of spades marches from the centre left of the screen horizontally to the correct, which deal harm on contact. On later turns, the speed of the swinging volition increment and the gaps betwixt spades decrease.
  • Chain Set on: King launches a series of chains with a spade symbol on height. Their trails are indicated with red lines. On afterwards turns, the rate of the bondage increases and the warning before each chain decreases.

Strategy

As Male monarch cannot be reasoned with co-ordinate to his flavor text, sparing him is not an option. Therefore, there are simply ii methods to defeat King. These two methods are either fighting or surviving all of King'south attacks for 15 turns. Fighting can stop the battle faster if the party'due south assault harm is stiff enough. Notwithstanding, this does not affect the post-battle sequence aside from a pocket-size textual difference regarding how the battle concluded.

Relationships

Queen

After returning to Castle Town at the end of Chapter two (if all Darkners from Cyber World are recruited), an interaction between Male monarch and Queen occurs in front of the basement prison cell, where King calls Queen "Queenie Beanie" and Queen calls Rex "Kingy Wingy". These pet names further reinforce possible by relations.

Lancer

Male monarch is Lancer's father. Despite this, they exercise not announced to take a close human relationship, as King spends little fourth dimension with his son and seems to care very little about his wellbeing, often leaving Rouxls Kaard to expect afterward and fifty-fifty feed Lancer. Nonetheless, King does seem to intendance about the public handling of Lancer, forcing Darkners to take orders from Lancer despite them not liking him.

In addition, speaking to King again in Chapter 2 reveals that his previous threat of throwing Lancer off Carte du jour Castle's roof was a bluff he never would have acted on. He also seems genuinely disgusted when the party is convinced he would actually harm his son, confident that Lancer would bounce back upwardly like a "bouncy trivial pumpkin".

Knight

Although not much is known about the Knight themselves, they are responsible for King becoming the absolute monarch of all Darkners in the Card Kingdom. As a effect, King holds the Knight in very loftier esteem, and promises not to fail them at any cost.

King's Subjects

King is the ruler of all Carte du jour Kingdom Darkners by the time the story takes place. However, everyone seems to either fright King or loathe him, and they are all very eager to have a new ruler replace him.

This is shown during the post-battle upshot where a large oversupply of Darkners assistance Lancer in overthrowing the tyrant, taking place only if the party hasn't defeated any enemy with violence (excluding Lancer, King, and Jevil).
